PERFORMANCE
REHABILITATION
At Performance Rehabilitation,
we employ a scientifically based recovery
model in the care of our patients. Our goal
is to return our patients from an accident
injured state to a pre-accident lifestyle.
The latest British and American
research suggests that patient reassurance,
pain relief methods and rehabilitative exercises
should be included in the case management
of spinal related pain.
Initially, proper management
of a motor vehicle accident focuses on pain
relief through the use of passive care approaches.
This care is provided at the Markham Pain
Clinic and may consist of chiropractic manipulative
therapy, acupuncture, physiologic therapeutic
modalities and massage therapy.
With the control of pain
and inflammation, active rehabilitative exercises
gain importance. Active rehabilitation concentrates
on improving flexibility, strength, endurance
and cardiovascular conditioning. The combined
effects of these rehabilitative protocols
is to prevent deconditioning that have resulted
from the injuries of the accident.
The customized program
given to patients may include stretching and
strengthening of muscles, joint proprioception
exercises and drills and the use of treadmills
and stationary bikes to increase cardiovascular
health. Equipment that may be used include
low tech equipment such as wobble boards,
theraband, swiss gym balls and other equipment
such as cybex resistance machines, free weights
and hydrotherapy. The program is tailored
to the patient's particular level of health,
injuries, occupation and physical activity
and is supervised by a certified kinesiologist
who has experience with the treatment of motor
vehicle accident injuries.
The Markham Pain Clinic
and Performance Rehabilitation use the facilities
provided by Club Markham which is located
at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Markham. This
state of the art health facility has the latest
in cardiovascular, rehabilitative and strength
training equipment. The use of the pool is
also open to all rehabilitation patients.
In addition, current patients
who are not motor vehicle accident patients
may be referred to the Performance Rehabilitation
program. Spinal stabilization exercises, sensory
motor stimulation and strength training programs
are offered.
The importance of
rehabilitation is well documented in the treatment
of motor vehicle accident patients. This added
service at the Markham Pain Clinic allows
patients to quickly return to their pre-accident
lifestyle. For motor vehicle accident patients,
the active rehabilitation program is covered
by their insurance plans.
